Canadian artist Juan Geuer (1917-2009) created groundbreaking installations that sit on the threshold between science and art. Rarely shown because challenging to install, his intricate works map the human condition and the carbon-based ecosystems and oxygenated atmospheres upon which we depend. He identified the onset of the Anthropocene age long before the term emerged to denote our current geological period wherein the Earth is significantly marked by human impact. This exhibition catalogue celebrates this artist’s significant legacy as a fearless truth seeker and presents his work in dialogue with other artists with whom he either collaborated, influenced, or worked with in parallel, from Michael Snow to Catherine Richards. In English and French.
Born in the Netherlands, Juan Geuer immigrated to Canada in 1954. His work has been featured in major exhibitions around the world, notably at the Museum Boymans van Beuningen Rotterdam, the List Visual Art Centre at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Art Gallery of Ontario.
